What motivates us to take a certain course? Possibility? A whim? Inspiration?
For Michael and Pauline Poulter, the owners & architects of Bluestone Lane Vineyard, it was all these reasons... and more.
Gazing across degraded paddocks in Balnarring some 15 years ago, together they knew that their search had ended - but the journey just begun. It seemed a world away for the master stone craftsman charged with restoring Melbourne’s heritage laneways.
They clasped each other’s hand tight; Bluestone Lane had its inception.
Michael’s success was founded through uniting experience & developing enthusiasm.
And sheer hard graft.
A bluestone path was forged into the property, hectares of vines established, a Cellar and Restaurant (Veraison Restaurant) erected, and a dedicated team assembled. The hard work paid off.
Successful & award winning early vintages of Pinot Noir & Chardonnay - the two varieties for Mornington Peninsula’s fame - caused excitement around the new label & garnered new devotees.
Yet secrets for a young Bluestone Lane were soon to be revealed...
Serendipity can reward a dedicated journey.
And so with Bluestone.
Sited in the region's newest viticulture district, not many foresaw its blessings: a micro climate which keeps the frost at bay by the rising sun but which is shielded from the harshest of the Summer by the hinterland behind, and prime alluvial soils which invigorate vine development.
The now flourishing vineyard, reinstated bush and wetlands displays this incredible environmental confluence.
It also encouraged a progression of varietal plantings to include Pinot Grigio & Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz & Pinot Meunier as the vigneron's passion widened. Now, the fickle cool climate of the area is assured to provide a stunning crop of bright & vibrant fruit, the hallmark of our wines.
Bluestone Lane has become the showcase of the Peninsula's possibilities.
Summer in 2017, after a deep-soaking Winter, has sprung with promise!
As the seasons roll on, further discoveries, chance & challenges enrich our course. Though Bluestone Lane Vineyard is firmly established, we're presently focussed on the little things in our drive for improvement and as we await the pending bud-burst.
Our reason after all is the wine!
An enormous effort this Winter went into refining our classic fleet - and on the development of some progressive new styles.
Michael, together with winemakers Andrew Thomson & Phillip Kettle, has taken a maverick approach to the current vintage producing an Australian classic, Sparkling Shiraz and two exceptional stickies that you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere: a Late Harvest Pinot Grigio and a Pinot Noir Liqueur.
Bluestone Lane wines partner with your special happenings.
